10 Facts About Sexsomnia: Sexual Intercourse During Sleep

10 Facts About Sexsomnia: Sexual Intercourse During Sleep

We're no strangers to bizarre sexual phenomenon, but this one is a mystery that had us truly baffled. While most of us are dreaming sweet dreams, and letting out bodies enjoy a good rest, others are suffering from a terrible sleep sex condition. Okay, so it doesn't sound that bad when we put it like that, but what if we told you there were people who were literally having sex by accident, with no memory of it in the morning? We can explain...

Known as 'sexsomnia' or sleep sex, this condition causes sufferers to engage in sexual activity while they're sleeping. As in, completely asleep, with no idea what's going on. While it may sound funny at first, this is a very real medical condition that often causes distress and embarrassment to the sufferer. Not to mention their surprised partners!

We hear a lot of people claim they "accidentally" had sex. Maybe they had one too many cocktails and went home with a rando - it wasn't their plan for the night, therefore, the events taking place are referred to as accidental. For those with sexsomnia, they genuinely do have sex by accident, often without any recollection of it ever happening.

There's really no definitive measure, but there are some conditions which may make people more susceptible to developing sexsomnia. People who sleepwalk or experience night terrors have a higher chance of suffering from sexsomnia, too. Doctors say that epilepsy can also cause sleep sex and other unusual sleeping patterns.

We get that being a sexsomniac could be confusing and stressful, but we can't help but feel bad for their partners, too. Sleeping people have woken up to their sexsomniac partners having sex with them, despite having never provided their consent. Of course, sufferers can't help what they do while sleeping, but it sounds pretty traumatic anyway!

Thankfully, sexsomnia is just like other parasomnias in the sense that it happens occasionally, and definitely not every night. The triggers for all parasomnias, including sleepwalking, appear to be alcohol, drugs, stress, and sleep deprivation. While sufferers aren't guaranteed to have an episode by engaging in one of the trigger behaviors, it's much more likely.

We've all heard the warnings to 'never wake a sleepwalker', as it could be dangerous. But this is a myth and they're actually more likely to encounter danger if you DON'T wake them up. Yes, they may be confused and disoriented, but it's better to snap them out of it. The same goes for sexsomnia - feel free to wake them up, especially if you don't want to have sex with them!

Sexsomnia is a relatively new disorder in terms of official medical acknowledgement. The condition was first published in 1996 by three Canadian researchers. Since it's documentation, some men have used the condition as a defense against rape charges, though it's not clear if they were genuinely experiencing sexsomnia or exploiting the condition for their own gain.
So, what does sexsomnia actually look like? Partners of sufferers describe them as usually having their eyes open, however, they are generally unblinking and unresponsive. Talking is also not uncommon, though we doubt the conversation is riveting. Sexsomniacs often feel confused, scared, and guilty about sleep sex, particularly if they wake up during the act

If sexsomniacs manage to make it through an entire sexual act and then continue sleeping, they are extremely unlikely to remember their actions when they wake up. Partners of sexsomniacs have sometimes engaged in sex, not realizing that their lover is actually sleeping. Imagine their shock the next day when they remember nothing!

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday taunted critics and protesters of his over 100 days medical sojourn in London, United Kingdom (UK) even as he thanked Nigerians who prayed for his speedy recovery devoid of political and religious affiliations. In a veiled reference to the #ResumeOrResign campaign group who had laid siege at his Nigeria House ‎temporary abode while in the UK, President Buhari who played host to the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) in the presidential villa, yesterday, asked the protesters to also return back to the country.
He prayed that they are not stuck there so that they do not experience the effect of Brexit and consequences of tax evasion. His words: “I am very happy with the prayers, it was very covered and reported across religions and ethnics. People ‎were praying.

“Some groups in London came and sang the national anthem and asked that I should go back home.“Indeed I have come back home. I hope those who went there are not stuck there, they will come back and join us… those that are stuck there with the Brexit, I hope they have weighed the implications that it won’t affect them including those that have properties there. Those who are not paying tax here, I hope when they sell their properties there they will bring some of the money here. We need it very badly here.”
He stressed that while in London, he closely followed events back home and was impressed with how they had been tackling inadequate food production because huge food imports were taking a toll on the Naira.
“I had so much time to watch television, NTA, I heard so much information about the states. I am very pleased with the states, you are all doing your best and it is proving to be good enough on agriculture and solid minerals. You are succeeding in agriculture because I think people cannot afford foreign food.

“The devaluation of the Naira is not my making; it may not favour us but it is something we cannot change. Some people were asking me if we should be more strict on the border, but I want to thank God this year is better than what it used to be.
Speaking at the occasion, the Governor of Zamfara State and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Abdullaziz Yari, said that when President Buhari came on board in 2015, some State Governors were owing salaries but with the bailout approved by the President and the Paris Club refunds, states have paid the backlog of salaries.
Also speaking, Governor Dave Umayi of Ebonyi State reiterated the commitment of State governors to the unity of the country and promised to assist the administration in improving the wellbeing of Nigerians.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents after the meeting, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, c‎ommended Nigerians who stood behind and prayed for President during his medical travails. “Our President went to take care of his health and now he is back healthy and healthier than before. We are here to appreciate him. We thank Almighty God that he is back safely.
“We equally thank his able lieutenant, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who held the country firm in his absence. That is the demonstration of teamwork. It has equally shown that Nigerians selected the best and elected the best in 2015 general elections and today Nigeria is better for it.
Also fielding questions, the Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalung, ‎who expressed gratitude to God for bringing back President Buhari, prayed that God will continue to guide him as he strives to tackle the challenges of governance in Nigeria.

He also commended Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for piloting the affairs of the country while the President was away. “We must commend him. In the absence of the president there was no vacuum because the Acting President filled in the gap and did his best up to this moment and showed absolute loyalty both to the nation and Mr. President.
Yesterday, President Buhari also observed the Juma’at prayers at the presidential villa mosque for the first time in over three months. He was joined by other worshippers including state governors, top government officials as well as Muslim staff of State House for the prayers.

JAMB crashes cut-off marks into varsities, others

By Kanayo Umeh

Prof Ishaq Oloyede
• Minister admits error in banning post-UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) yesterday crashed the admission cut-off marks into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in the country from 180 to as low as 120 and 100.

The Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who disclosed in Abuja during the Combined Policy Meeting on 2017 admissions, pegged the mininum score for degree programmes at 120, while that of polytechnics and colleges of education was put at 100.
Saying that tertiary institutions are at liberty to rejig the benchmarks subject to the decisions of their Senate and academic boards, Oloyede stressed that no institution was expected to go below the cut-off marks.

He said: “For degree-awarding institutions, the minimum JAMB score is 120, for polytechnics, it ranges between 100 and 180 and for colleges for education, is 100.”
The JAMB registrar said a Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) would be used to streamline admission processes among Institutions, while it addresses challenges associated with former approach.
Oloyede also said that institutions could conduct dual mode system which involves both manual and the new module. He advocated for a dynamic educational policy to facilitate admissions.
He continued: “All over the world, there is agitation for a dynamic educational policy. JAMB only admits for National Diploma not Higher National Diploma so why should we use the same requirement for ND and Bsc that is an unreasonable parity.
“We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut-off marks. We need not over-dramatise issue of cut-off marks.”Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who presided over the meeting, admitted acting in error in last year when he placed a ban on the conduct of post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) by tertiary education institutions in the country.
The minister, who disclosed that government has lifted the ban, stated that he was forced to take the erroneous decision based on the information made available to him and the way institutions were using it to exploit candidates.
His words: “At that time, it became an avenue for exploitation and a burden on many parents.”Adamu said institutions were now free to conduct the exercise, adding that its fee must not exceed N2000.
