THE National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, yesterday delivered large quantities of relief materials to the Anambra State government for stockpiling flood victims.
The materials delivered to the state by NEMA, in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) include 1,200 bags of rice, 1,000 bags of beans, 200 bags of garri, 305 bags of sugar, 1,500 pieces of wax prints, 1,500 pieces of Guinea brocade, 850 pieces of mattresses, 600 bags of cement, 1,000 pieces of ceiling boards, 350 pieces of roofing sheets and 500 pieces of plastic buckets, among others.
The materials were received on behalf of the state government by the permanent secretary in the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Daniel Ezeanwu.
NEMA director of relief and rehabilitation, Mr. Udemezue Eze, who represented the agency’s Director General, Alhaji Mohammadu Sani Sidi at the ceremony explained that sensitization campaigns to the flood- prone areas of Ekwusigo, Ihiala, Idemili South, Awka North and other council areas in the state, had been carried out during which the people were educated on how to take precautionary measures during flooding.
According to him, NEMA’s action was to demonstrate its commitment to disaster risk reduction and readiness for any emergency situation.
Eze said: “The NIMET prediction that urged riverine states to prepare for massive flooding of riverine communities in their states was a wake-up call.
“Safe havens were identified as flood- prone communities in the riverine areas where residents could assemble before evacuation if the water mark rises to a dangerous and life threatening level.
“Though the NIMET prediction fell short of the heightened expectation of a massive deluge, Anambra State was adequately prepared for any eventuality. We urge other states to be a bit more serious in disaster risk management like Anambra State.”
He said that NEMA was always willing to support states that demonstrate serious commitment to disaster preparedness programmes like Anambra, adding that the items delivered were in support of the state government’s extraordinary efforts to strategically stockpile food and non-food items as a preparation against NIMET flood prediction.
