Security guard docked over alleged failure to prevent stealing

A security guard, James Akaazu, 30, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for alleged failure to prevent stealing from a shop. Akaazu who lives at Olu Adebayo Olutoye St., Asolo in Ikorodu, is facing a two-count-charge bordering on stealing and felony. The prosecutor, Cpl. Bosede Adegeshin, told the court that the offences were committed on Nov. 21 at I p.m. at a shop located at Dayo Akinyemi St. in Ikorodu. She alleged that the accused conspired with others, now at large to break into a foodstuff shop where he works as a security guard. “Akaazu being a security guard to the shop slept off while on duty and the criminals, who were now at large, stole 30 bags of rice, generator and 50 kegs of vegetable oil from the shop.’’ Adegeshin said that the offences contravened Sections 408 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The section stipulates a two-year jail term for offender who neglects to prevent felony. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate, Mr O.O. Olatunji, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum. Olatunji ruled that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and the other must be a community leader in the area. The case was adjourned till Jan. 18, 2016 for mention.
